What Do You Have Against Pico/Robertson?

Posted by on Sep 28, 2008 in Adventist, Blog |

“I’m moving out,” says an acquaintance. “I moved here to meet girls but it is just too crowded. There are too many lines just to go to the supermarket. Too many cars. I’m moving away. I’ll come here once a month for a social weekend.”

A friend: “I don’t like the perfect Jews. Everybody’s like, the kids are gifted and they go to the best schools. You are in a fishbowl. God forbid you go out on Shabbat outside of your house and you’re wearing shorts. Acch, I can’t eat at your house.

“I know all the people who are in power now. They were always snobby. There are parents at Harkham Hillel who are not observant. We have friends in Pico/Rob who will eat at Souplantation and they’ll drive on Shabbat.

“I have a feeling that the people who are in the power structure at Bnai David are very much into your business.”

Levi: “I didn’t find that. I often wore a suit that had holes in it, or an untucked shirt, and nobody made fun of me. It’s just a bunch of nice people. I don’t think they pry.”

Friend: “Bnai David is suffocating. It’s too much. Pico/Rob is too crowded. There’s no open space. There’s Circle Park and there’s Roxbury Park. And that’s it. You feel like you are in New York.

“Every major synagogue in Pico/Robertson is run to succeed. Bnai David has realized that its charter is married families with kids. Beth Jacob is somewhat Death Jacob though to some extent Rabbi Weil has gotten his share of the young marrieds, the ones not smart enough to make it at Bnai David, the ones who are not lawyers and engineers and run their own businesses.

“You know the three shortest books? Jewish Business Ethics. Italian War Heroes. Blacks I’ve Met While Yachting.

After viewing that thing in Loma Linda University where your dad was speaking, it’s ‘Blacks I met While Being An Adventist.’ You guys don’t take them? It’s too cerebral?”

Levi: “They have their own churches.”

Friend: “That crowd is the Republican party’s wetdream. It’s not even homogeneous. They even have the same color grey hair. They wear the same crappy clothes from JC Pennys. It looked like the Twilight Zone.

“Why don’t you like that religion?”

Levi: “The chicks are hot. But you’re out of it. There are no great Seventh-Day Adventist politicians, generals, financiers, directors, producers, writers, painters, journalists. When you’re Jewish, you are right in the middle of what’s happening.”

Friend: “Give it some time.”

Levi: “They’ve been around 170 years. They’ll always be out of it. It’s an eschatological religion. It’s about the next world.”

Friend: “They’re waiting for Hale Bob to come down and land and take them away?”

Levi: “Yes.”

Friend: “It seems like a lot of people leave. I have a friend who was an Adventist. To this day, he’s a vegetarian, but he’s like, ‘Ahh, those people, forget about it.’”

Levi: “They’re nice sweet simple people.”

Friend: “But there’s no action?”

Levi: “Yeah. But a lot of hot chicks.”

Friend: “But they’re all white.”

Levi: “No. A lot of Asians. My Yellow Fever was burning up while I was there. I went to the Korean church and I was in shangrila.”

Beth Jacob Gets A New Cantor

Posted by on Sep 22, 2008 in beth jacob |

I’m told: Nati Baram was approved overwhelmingly – rumor has it he got over 90% approval. He will commence his duties in December and will arrive here late November with his wife Carmit and the baby they are now expecting. Most reassuringly it was not just his outstanding voice and world class cantorial skills – but also his fine character and personal references as a true Ben Torah and Talmid Chacham; and his view of the Cantorate as being a full time pastoral task as well including visiting the sick, training choirs and involving the children … He has taught at Merkaz Harav and other “modern Orthodox” Yeshivot – and is passionately Zionist.

Avshalom Katz will end his tenure at Beth Jacob after the Chaggim and will leave big shoes to be filled. The talk in town is that Los Angeles will be gaining a world class Chazzan – and a super-mench.

Art Cafe

From Eater LA:

A reader query: “So there’s a restaurant location at the corner of Robertson and the Southwest side of Cashio (south of Pico) that has changed from a lame expensive Italian joint to a lame expensive ‘Fusion Sushi’ joint named Fu-Zen. Well Fu-Zen didn’t last long and now they’re ripping the place apart to make it something else. Any leads on what it might be? I’m crossing my fingers for a brewpub but I’m sure there’s a .05% chance that’s the case” Public records show that something called Art Cafe and Restaurant is moving in. That’s all we’ve got for now.

The Jewish Learning Exchange Cares

Posted by on Sep 22, 2008 in Chabad |

The Jewish Learning Exchange is located at 512 N. La Brea.

I remember taking a beginner’s Hebrew class there. It was taught by the boss — Rabbi Avrohom Czapnik. He was exceedingly patient and good humored despite the many stupid interruptions he endured from some of the dimmer bulbs in the class.

When I missed a session, I found two CDs and a packet of notes in my mail box, providing everything I’d missed.

Kosher Meat Too Expensive

Posted by on Sep 21, 2008 in Kosher |

From Boston.com:

With Rosh Hashana only a week away, Newton residents wanting to buy meat products from a kosher butcher will have to look outside the city, after their only local option decided to end its kosher supervision.

Gordon & Alperin owner Ricardo Bosich said he dropped the food-handling oversight last month. He will offer prepackaged kosher meats, as local supermarkets do.

“I can’t afford the kosher supervision,” said Bosich, who said he is looking for a less-expensive provider. “It’s a hard time for everyone right now, since the economy is so bad.”

A message from Bosich’s former supervisor, Rabbi Aaron Hamaoui of the Sephardic Community of Greater Boston, published on Kosher Blog explains that this “was not due to a violation, but a business decision made by the proprietor.”

Traditionally, kosher restaurants and bakeries maintain their certification by hiring rabbis who oversee the food products that are sold in the facility. Rabbis inspect all canned and prepackaged goods to make sure they have kosher labels and check the origins of meat to confirm that it is from a kosher meat processor. Kosher supervisors are also vigilant in making sure that dairy and meat are not stored together.

“One wants the source of meat and how it is processed to be supervised and certified by experts,” said Rabbi Benjamin Samuels, with Congregation Shaarei Tefillah in Newton Centre. “And for the kosher consumer, that is an absolute requirement.”

Pico/Robertson Beauty

Posted by on Sep 12, 2008 in Blog |

From Robert Avrech:

Every once in a while I grab my camera, a Canon Rebel, and walk around our neighborhood, Pico Robertson, here in Los Angeles, snapping photos of, well, whatever.

Here are some snapshots—isolated textures and geometric details—of my local gas station.

It’s true, gas prices are painfully high; it’s true that bums—drug addicts and alcoholics—panhandle at the station; it’s true that the gasoline fumes make me ill, but there is great beauty in this space.

Hey, I’m just a romantic fool.

Restaurant News: Prime Grill Becomes Cow Jumps…

Posted by on Sep 12, 2008 in Restaurants |

The premises formerly occupied by Prime Grill (Rodeo Collection, 421 N. Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills) are now the new home of the “Cow Jumped Over The Moon” Restaurant. The old Cow Jumps cheese ‘n wine store is still exactly where it was – right near the parking lot where plentiful car fumes dull the senses and choke the lungs as one picks from the finest imported delicacies.

But the restaurant is grand, spacious and welcoming. The food is simple, fresh and delicious – and magnificently prepared. Pricing is reasonable – and the genuinely warm welcome one receives from the owner and the staff is a great start to any meal.

Rabbi Leah Kroll Makes Aliyah

Posted by on Sep 4, 2008 in Israel |

Tom Tugend writes:

Rabbi Leah KrollRabbi Leah Kroll

Rabbi Leah Kroll has been dreaming about living in Israel since she was a teenager at a Jewish summer camp in California, and now at 55, she has said goodbye to her mother, three adult children and one grandchild, boarded an El Al jet and made aliyah.

The Los Angeles native comes from a long line of Zionists, but it was the little emotional tugs that helped make up her mind.

“Every time I visited Israel and landed at Ben-Gurion Airport, I would stand in the foreign visitors line and look with envy at the people standing in the Israeli citizen line,” she recalled, sitting in her spacious Sherman Oaks home crammed with cartons and suitcases just before her departure.

“In Israel, I feel my soul nourished,” she said. “I feel nourished when I go to the supermarket on Thursday and complete strangers greet me with, ‘Shabbat shalom,’ and when cab drivers wish me, ‘chag sameach.’”

She had a less-elated feeling when she spent time in Israel 2006 at the outbreak of the Second Lebanon War and saw American tourists scurrying to the airport to get out of the country.

“I was embarrassed as an American Jew,” she said. “We always talk a big game; we proclaim that we are one, but now when the chips were down….”

Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles Names Rabbi Sharon Brous Recipient of Inaugural Inspired Leadership Award

Posted by on Sep 4, 2008 in Rabbis |

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles (The Foundation) today announced it has selected Rabbi Sharon Brous as the recipient of its first Inspired Leadership Award. The Foundation created the biennial award program to recognize an outstanding professional leader whose vision can help transform the Los Angeles Jewish community. It provides a $100,000 donor advised fund for Brous to distribute to programs and projects of local Jewish organizations that support her vision.

Brous is the founder of IKAR, a vibrant Jewish spiritual community in Los Angeles dedicated to the integration of spiritual and religious practice and the pursuit of social justice. Among her accomplishments, Brous is credited by many for her innovative approach to reaching out and drawing back many young, unaffiliated Jews to Judaism. She was included in the Forward newspapers annual list of the 50 most influential American Jews for three consecutive years, and Newsweek has named her one of the leading rabbis in the country.

Rabbi Brous exemplifies the committees criteria for this prestigious award: shes a forward-thinking leader who is ahead of her timetruly creative and entrepreneurial in her approach to Jewish communal issues, said Foundation President and CEO Marvin I. Schotland. Her dynamic personality and commitment to Judaism and social justice are truly inspirational. Shes a person of integrity and accomplishment who works to effect positive, meaningful change in the Los Angeles Jewish community.

He continued, For the first time in The Foundations more than 50-year history, we have established a monetary award program that recognizes and supports the work of an individual. Our role as a prime source for funding causes in Jewish Los Angeles continues to evolve and expand. Consequently, our board feels it is incumbent upon us to identify outstanding young leaders and support their work.

Rabbi Brous was selected from 15 candidates nominated by The Foundations board. However, our organization has been aware of Rabbi Brouss breakthrough work for several years, and in fact, she was one of the inspirations for establishing the award, Schotland concluded.

Surprised to Receive Award

I am thrilled and honored to receive The Foundations inaugural Inspired Leadership Award, Brous said. We started IKAR four years ago believing that if we approached traditional Jewish life with a pious irreverence, a true sense of mission, a spirit of innovation and risk taking, and a real sense of humor, we could build a beautiful and compelling model, and simultaneously catalyze a critical conversation in the American Jewish community about the Jewish future.

We knew that these were ambitious objectives, but we also knew that the time was right to create a new model of Jewish community, particularly in a moment defined by religious apathy on one hand; extremism and divisiveness on the other. This award recognizes our work toward realizing our vision, the rabbi added.

Brous Fund: Encouraging Others to Live Charitably

Brous plans to use the $100,000 donor advised fund to inspire others to give thoughtfully and generously. This includes a matching challenge to IKAR community members who join her in a tzedakah (charity) collective. Brous envisions a group that will study the Laws of Tzedakah (charity and justice) and collectively explore visionary, purpose-driven organizations and projects around the city that merit funding.

My goal is to inspire people who might not otherwise be giving to give, and give meaningfully. We will be leveraging The Foundations gift to create an even greater pool of resources, Brous said.

Accomplishments

Brous, 34, was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2001. She received her masters degree in human rights from Columbia University, where she also received her bachelors degree. After ordination, she served as a Marshall T. Meyer Rabbinic Fellow at Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in New York City. Following her move to Los Angeles in 2002, she was Rabbi in Residence and director of Advanced Jewish Studies at Milken Community High School.

For the past seven years, Brous has served on the faculty of REBOOT, a nonprofit that seeks to revive Jewish tradition, and on the regional council of Progressive Jewish Alliance. She teaches social justice and spiritual activism at Hebrew Union College and sits on the rabbinic advisory boards of American Jewish World Service and Hebrew College, Newton, Mass. A native of New Jersey, she resides in the Fairfax area of Los Angeles with her husband, David Light, a comedy writer, and their two daughters.
