LimmudLA’s Healing Havdalah Program At Dockweiler Beach

Posted by on Nov 8, 2008 in Limmud |

As we drive in, we see a woman holding up a sign called “Healing Havdalah.”

“Go This Way! You won’t have to run into any other minorities,” says my friend.

“Jewish organizations are always very careful with their directions when they hold events around the mud people.”

By the bathroom, I run into an acquaintance.

“I’ve grown a beard,” she says, “so people won’t recognize me. No, that would be you.”

“Do they have ‘Healing Havdalah’ ceremonies anywhere but LA? Do they do this in New York?” I wonder.

I don’t think so.

“Liberals planned this,” says a woman. “Conservatives would never come up with something like this.”

There’s spirited singing but it doesn’t project. A group of us try to dance but we get bogged down and tired by the sand.

Last year, this event got 600 people, I’m told. This year it attracts about 200.

We chat with Dennis Wilen, Jewish Journal webmaster. He’s standing with Danielle Berrin and Orit Arfa.

“Have you seen Danielle Berrin?” says my friend later.

“Yes.”

“Wow, what a knockout. She’s gorgeous. Next time, I’ll have to talk to her. Is she nice?”

“Yes.”

“Maybe it was just the way the fire lit up her features?”

“No, she’s gorgeous.”

Danielle stares into the fire, her fingers stroking her pearls while the wind whips her long blonde hair. She wears white pants. She’s tall and slender. She looks quite dreamy, probably thinking about Brett Ratner and French New Wave film.

“She’s quite nice,” I say.

“Dennis has a lot of technical knowledge for a guy his age,” says my friend.

“Yeah, and he’s got a lot of sexual prowess too.”

LimmudLA.org.

As we walk out, I ask my friend, “Do you feel healed?”

“Yes, my anger has been transmuted into love.”

Joe:  I sent a letter to Salem Broadcasting telling them I will never listen to KRLA or any of their stations primarily because it was only because of my regard for Dennis. Since his financial panic, and now his play-nice attitude in the face of unaswered widespread voting and campaign finance fraud, I’ve lost my confidence in his  bravery and honesty. And you know how much I’ve defended him in the past. He’s got a lot of explaining to do to me personally before I ever listen to him again.
Luzdedos1:  lol
Joe:  why is that funny?
Luzdedos1:  i’m sure he’s crushed
Joe:  he will  be
Joe:  if i can get that angry to write what I did, i’m sure there are many more
Joe:  his ratings are going down
Joe:  I’m sure that will please you

A Healing Havdalah Celebration Saturday Night

Posted by on Nov 5, 2008 in Limmud |

Does anyone want to share a ride to this event?

From LimmudLA.org:

We are Democrats. We are Republicans.

But we are all Jews.

On Saturday night, November 8th at 7pm, we will come together and put politics behind us. The etiquette of the evening is that we will not cheer for the winner or lament for the loser. We will not speak publicly or even whisper between us to make anyone feel that they voted the wrong way.

We will celebrate Havdalah together on the beach and sing our hearts out. We will then break into small groups on the sand for a Torah-inspired learning session about healing community differences.

Who would plan a HEALING HAVDALAH and think about our community in this way through all its diversity? LimmudLA.

For those of you attended last year, you will remember the raucous, spiritual, celebratory parking lot Havdalah attended by 600 Jews of every persuasion as the highlight of an incredible event. Now, we are doing the HEALING HAVDALAH on November 8th to give you a taste of the even bigger and better LimmudLA that will take place again on Presidents’ Day weekend, 2009.

Be present on the evening of November 8th. Bring your instruments and drums. Inhale the blended essences of the varied Havdalah spices that represent our diversity as Jews. Leave plenty of time for travel and parking. Don’t be a minute late. Because Havdalah doesn’t wait. It will begin at 7pm sharp. All ages welcome.

When: Saturday November 8, 2008 @ 7:00pm
Where: Dockweiler Beach, where the 105/Imperial Highway meets the beach
What to bring: Sweatshirts. Blankets. Instruments. Drums.

Please forward this email to 10 Jewish friends or relatives who should be at this Healing Havdalah and know about LimmudLA.

Pico Kosher Deli

Posted by on Nov 3, 2008 in Restaurants |

Joe emails:

The best way to tell how good a Kosher restaurant is to count how many non-Orthodox patrons it has. Orthodox people do not know good food and think that anything they do not have to clean up their dishes after is satisfactory. At Pico Kosher Deli (PKD), the lunch crowd is about one third to one half non-kippa wearing jews. That means the food is good – in fact, the only comparable restaurant for patronage by the non-from is pat’s (review to come). Nonjews will regularly say – this is the best deli food i have ever had – and these are people who know the usual suspects such as the yorkshire grill downtown, langer’s by alvarado, jerry’s deli wherever anyone is stupid enough to visit to actually go to jerry’s, brent’s in chatsworth, and even canter’s in fairfax.

PKD is best know, as its name implies, for its deli food. A half pastrami half corn beef is perfectly warm, indescribably moist and just the bomb. But PKD has more than just a good sandwich. Its burgers are great comfort food and the more upscale items on its menu such as the steak entrees are fantastic. The sides such as matzo ball soup, stuffed cabbage, and even eggs with tomatoes are all good.

The owners, the sons of Mr. Hecht (a survivor who knew how to run a deli), are there on a daily basis. It is one of the few kosher restaurants to actually expand its space – and it is still crowded. If you want lunch there, you best arrive before noon as the tables are full by 12:15. For dinner, it is easier, but still can be crowded on the weeknights – Sunday night is actually a breeze there as people opt for the more tony options such as Shanghai Garden or Pat’s.

There is so much good about the place it is hard to knock on it, but since lashon hara is permitted with regard to the improvement of deli sandwiches, here are some negatives. I think – and cannot prove – that the sandwiches have gotten smaller. But again, this is probably due to the economy. The service is ok – huge plus goes to the older hispanic lady waitress, but sitting a single lady at a booth while four people wait is pretty bad.

There is a bit of chillul hashem (desecration of g-d’s name) committed mainly by jewish day school kids eating there like slobs — there is actually a sign on the booths asking people not to put their feet up. Maybe Rabbi Kanefsky should lecture about that.

Bottom line – PKD is mandatory reading for the orthodox jew and fellow homo sapiens in the area. Note that they have a take out place a door down – I recommend the barbecue chicken and the kugels – have to admit I have not tried the cholent although a non-jewish friend has and it is the only thing keeping his jewish kids (wife is jewish) connected to the faith. If you have a client or business associate you want to eat lunch with, PKD is a great place for goyim – just do an Annie Hall reminder not to order milk – but note that you can get a salad at PKD with imitation ranch dressing. All in all, 4 stars out of 5 – they want more stars, they should open a valley location and expand the existing location.

Erin Leib, Daniel Smokler

Posted by on Nov 1, 2008 in Rabbis |

From the New York Times:

Erin Dana Leib, the daughter of Naomi R. Leib and Dr. Martin L. Leib of Riverdale, the Bronx, is to be married Sunday to Rabbi Daniel Jonathan Smokler, a son of Carol S. Smokler and Irving A. Smokler of Boca Raton, Fla. Rabbi Irving Greenberg will officiate at the Mandarin Oriental in Manhattan.

The bride, 30, is a candidate for a Ph.D. in social thought at the University of Chicago. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard. She teaches Jewish philosophy and studies the Talmud at the Drisha Institute for Jewish Education in Manhattan.

…Both the bride’s and the bridegroom’s previous marriages ended in divorce.

The couple’s paths first crossed in 1995 when they took part in Nesiya, a summer program in Israel, during high school.

“Dan was a rather charismatic hippie in his youth, meaning a cool, long-haired, spiritual guy,” Ms. Leib said.

Mr. Smokler, in turn, said he was “definitely intrigued by her, but our paths never crossed long enough.” After that summer Ms. Leib went back to New York and Mr. Smokler to Ann Arbor, yet they remained in contact and would often see one another a few times each year at Jewish events.
