Friday Is The Fast Of The Tenth Of Tevet

From BnaiDavid.com:

Friday, December 17th will be

the Fast of the 10th of Tevet

The fast of the 10th of Tevet commemorates the day on which the Babylonians laid siege to Jerusalem, leading to its eventual destruction in 586 B.C.E. This fast (along with the 17th of Tamuz, Tisha B'Av and Tzom Gedalia) was actually suspended during the Second Temple period, but was volitionally reaccepted by the community of Israel at some point following the second destruction in 70 C.E. This was motivated by the general state of physical insecurity that the Jewish people faces on a continuous basis. As long as this unfortunate state of affairs continues to exist, these fasts are binding upon of us. Women who are pregnant and nursing are exempt, though the
custom is that they make the effort to fast as well.

One Last Thing

Rav Yosef Kanefsky of BnaiDavid.com emails:

With a wonderful Pesach now behind us, there is still one last halachik matter that we need to be aware of that affects our post-Pesach shopping. Chametz that was Jewishly-owned over Pesach (in violation of the mitzva to dispossess ourselves of chametz) may not be eaten. The only practical consequence of this for us, is that we may not buy actual chametz (see below) from a couple of local stores for the next few weeks, i.e. until the stock that was in the store's property over Pesach moves out. The email from the RCC below, explains all the details.

Two Great Israel Events In February

Rav Yosef Kanefsky writes from BnaiDavid.com:

Please circle two dates on your February calendars for two great Israel events:

The first is Saturday night, Feb. 20, when we'll be enjoying the Israeli hit movie Noodle at the Lions Gate theater in Culver City. http://www.israelifilms.co.il/40420/Noodle
The film is truly delightful, the theater will be all ours that night, and where else can you still see a movie for just $8?!  We chose Noodle both because it truly transports us to Israel for the evening, and because in its own beautiful way raises important questions about the pressing and complex social issue of foreign workers in Tel Aviv. And I'm delighted to share that the Deputy Consul General, Gil Artzyeli, who is an expert on this topic, will be sharing some thoughts and taking our questions after the film is over.  Please be sure to RSVP today to Vivian Lurie at kessian@aol.com .

On Tuesday evening the 23rd, Bnei Akiva will be holding its annual Evening of Jewish Heroism (click on it).  This event is an important expression of our solidarity with Israel, our support for the work of Bnei Akiva, and it is always  a deeply inspiring event, re-affirming our faith in the Jewish people and in the inner strength if the State of Israel. The above link has all of the details, and I urge you to participate. As a shul, let's stand up and be counted at this significant community event.
