Woman Attacked Sept. 18

Posted by on Oct 6, 2012 in Crime | 0 comments

I got this email: There was a woman brutally attacked outside of my window on Tuesday September 18th at 3AM. I didn’t read about anything on your blog and was wondering if you heard anything further about what happened. There were a bunch of police cars and I heard the woman screaming bloody murder. It was pretty bad and it took the police 15 or 20 minutes to get to her.

Just thought I’d give you a head’s up if you have resources to get more information for the neighborhood. This happened in front of 1050 Sherbourne Drive.

The Shmira Patrol

Kenneth Lowenstein writes: Shmira was once again activated for a single mother with two kids. Originally another agency was called but forwarded the call to us. We jumped on it as soon as we got the call and members responded. We escorted the caller to her house and have ongoing contact with the victim. We take all calls seriously and treat them with the utmost care. Our mission and goal is to respond to every call if possible even though it may not be a “Shmira Call” Once we arrive and establish that we can render certain needs we activate other local organizations. Though Shmira will always offer its services whenever wherever.
Help us grow by making a difference. We need serious members, volunteers.
We are working closely with LAPD and will be taking an exclusive members only a course which upon completion we will have a letter stating full support from the LAPD West Los Angeles Division. We will be approaching Beverly Hills Police Department as well since we cover a lot of that area.
We have recently had an increase of calls for i.e Tomchei Shabbos and other residential calls. Crime is on the rise so we ask everyone to be vigilant and safe. BE aware. Remember Lock it and hide it.

We decided to follow up and see what exactly was going on and find a black male lying in street Robertson and 18th. We then called police and it was later discovered that he had multiple stab wounds. This was now a crime scene. Our members staged on Airdrome by 7/11 and helped with traffic control. Our heart goes out to the victims family.

…Los Angeles Shmira Patrol hosted its 2nd community-wide Cpr/First Aid course. 15 new participants from the community signed up to learn and walk away with life saving skills and certifications. Los Angeles: On June 17, 2012, around 10:20 p.m., West Los Angeles patrol officers responded to a call of a ‘Man cutting himself with a knife” in the 1500 block of South Sherbourne Avenue. The New Citizens Crime Patrol For Pico-Robertson

Kenneth Lowenstein, founder and director of the LA Shmira Patrol, spoke in shul Sunday evening about taking note of suspicious behavior and reporting threats to the police.

He begins his talk with an anecdote about a tattooed skinhead in his 30s who stopped by the LINKLA shul on Robertson Blvd last week and made various “Heil Hitler” salutes. Somebody saw him and ran into Petco and called 9-1-1. Making such salutes is not a crime, but police take note of such behavior. We can’t beat people up for saying things we don’t like, but if people are publicly invoking anti-Semitism, they should be noted and recorded.

With your help we can reach our goal and then focus on a Mobile Command Center or Response Vehicle.”

Pico-Robertson Welcomes In New Year With Gun Shots

Posted by on Jan 1, 2012 in Crime |

I heard a lot of gunshots around midnight last night as the hood welcomed in the new year.

I hear there was a big police presence at the 18th St/La Cienega Blvd mall in the early morning hours of Sunday.

The gun shots came from the ghetto area near the mall. I think kids were just firing into the air to celebrate the new year.

Orthodox Jews were mugged and one was hurt and sent to the hospital last Shabbat. The man who was hurt was walking Friday night near Crescent Heights, east of La Cienega Blvd, and Airdrome.

So I expected this Shabbat there would be a major police presence in the community. I heard the police were pursuing these mugging cases and there was political pressure on the police to do something. Yet I didn’t see police around this Shabbat in Pico-Robertson.

Orthodox Jew Mugged On Airdrome/Garth Saturday Afternoon

Posted by on Dec 24, 2011 in Crime |

An Orthodox Jew walking to shul on Airdome, a block west of La Cienega, found two black teenagers in white t-shirts walking beside him. One pinned his arms and the other went through his pockets.

“Give us your money,” one said.

“I don’t have any money. It’s my Sabbath,” said the Jew.

The boys ran off. Their getaway car was parked on Holt.

They drove over to Pickford and La Cienega. When the Jew spotted them, they drove away fast.

This case is getting a lot of police and political attention.

YICC.com emails:

Dear Friends,

Please forward this to your neighbors and anyone else you think would find this information useful. While this may not have happened in your neighborhood, it is much too close for comfort.

As reported:
We just heard from our friend who was mugged on Friday night on
La Cienega and Pico. He lives in Crestview. Two other men were accosted, with their children present, as well in the past month.

The perpetrators in all three incidents were black gang members. Which gang, he could not identify.

In one incident, the man faced his assailant, in another he was grabbed by men in a car and frisked for money. In this person’s case, he was attacked and beaten in front of his son (we have subsequently verified that this man who davens at Chabad of Beverlywood was taken to Kaiser’s ER and needed 15 stitches). All three were religious Jews who carry no money on Shabbat.

PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS AND KEEP SAFE!

Shoot-Out At The Smoke N Shop

Posted by on Dec 17, 2011 in Crime |

I was walking down La Cienega Blvd a couple of weeks ago and I noticed a bunch of candles on the sidewalk, apparently a memorial.

Why would somebody die at La Cienega and Alcott, I thought?

Further on, I noticed another memorial.

Strange, I thought.

Now I realize what happened.

I now hear the police killed one suspect. He told his girlfriend he would not be taken alive and he wasn’t.

I notice this Smoke N Shop tends to attract a bad crowd. So do marijuana dispensaries. Not good for the Jews.

More.

Dennis Romero reports:

Looks like bad guys robbed the wrong place in more ways than one.
Not only did they hit a Pico-Robertson smoke shop next to a marijuana dispensary (?), but the shop owner defended his business with a a gun.

One suspect was killed and another was wounded before an apparent retreat.

It all happened over the weekend only a few blocks south of Beverly Hills:

The shooting was reported at 9 p.m. yesterday at the Smoke ‘N’ Gifts shop on South La Cienega Boulevard and Alcott Street, according to authorities and reports.

The owner drew a gun after as many as a half dozen suspects stormed the place, according to witnesses and police.

One suspect was taken to Cedars Sinai Medical Center where he succumbed to is wounds, authorities said. Another was shot in the head and said to be in critical condition.

REPORT: The second suspect wanted for attempting to rob a smoke shop on La Cienega Boulevard on Nov. 20 was shot and killed by police last week after he took hostages and confronted an LAPD SWAT team in South Los Angeles.
The suspect, Lee Jefferson, 22, was killed in the shootout, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 23, according to Det. Herman Frettlohr, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Bureau Homicide Unit. Jefferson was being sought in connection with a robbery that occurred at the One Stop Smoke N Gifts, located at 1435 S. La Cienega Blvd., where the owner shot and killed one of the robbers, and a customer was also shot in the head. Initial reports stated that the owner had also shot the customer, but Frettlohr said Monday that authorities had not determined exactly what occurred.
“We don’t know who shot who,” Frettlohr added in regards to the unidentified 21-year-old customer. “He is going to survive.”
Frettlohr confirmed the owner had shot and killed one of the suspects, Dornice Washington, 23, of Los Angeles, at the scene. The second suspect, now identified as Jefferson, reportedly also fired his gun before fleeing the store. Frettlohr said Jefferson was a gang member.

Domestic Violence Calls In Beverly Hills

Posted by on Oct 27, 2011 in Beverly Hills, Crime, Persia |

Around 3 p.m., I was walking down Corning near Olympic in 90035 and noticed a police helicopter circling over head and three police cars with their lights flashing. They were tracking a domestic violence call. Some blonde woman had gone running down the street away from some guy with a ponytail.

My friend said that he had a friend on the Beverly Hills police force and every time he went out on a domestic violence call, it was usually to the home of Persian Jews.

I’m friends with many Persian Jews in Pico-Robertson. They tend to be louder and more expressive of their emotions than Americans born here. They’ll yell and scream like you and I would carry on a normal conversation.

They tend to have close families and they tend to fight a lot. By contrast with the natives, they tend to be more dramatic and more expressive and more bonded with their families. Persians are more likely to drive up to an apartment and start honking for their friends or family to come out.

I once had a Persian-Jewish therapist. When she asked about my family, I said we were average close for white people. I meant that the white people I knew tended to not have families as tight as the Persian ones I knew.

The Dramatic Divide Between East And West Of Robertson Blvd

Posted by on Oct 4, 2011 in Crime |

For many decades, respectable people were loathe to travel east of Robertson Blvd. It was the great divide between respectable and dangerous society. East of Robertson, particularly south of 18th Street, you get gangs and crime and violence. West of Robertson, you have Beverlywood and Century City. The lawns and homes are kept up nicely. There’s much less crime.

You don’t have to worry as much about parking your car overnight west of Robertson. There are fewer break-ins. The streets are safer.

Most of the big shuls, including all of the Modern Orthodox shuls in the hood are west of Robertson.

After living east of Robertson for the past 14 years, I’m now staying west of Robertson and the air is great. It seems cleaner! The homes and yards are nicer. The people are nicer. You don’t find the nasty ghetto west of Robertson.

I was walking Robertson Blvd tonight, coming home from the library. And it felt great to be on the safe side, the nice side, the respectable side of the great divide.

I looked in at the parking lot at YULA today and all the cars but one were nice. They were new and clean and some were luxury cars.

I want to belong to the respectable set. Now I just have to live a respectable life and hold down a respectable job and bingo! I’m there.

Man Shot, Killed In South Robertson Just Standing In A Driveway

There are all sorts of bad element, bad gangbangers, thieves and the like hanging out and walking around south of Pico Blvd near Robertson in zip code 90035. These are areas I’ve been checking out to rent a room or a guest house or a studio apartment.

I’ve had friends and acquaintances held up at knife point by gangbangers in Pico-Robertson. Sometimes people are just walking home on Shabbat and they’re assaulted. Cars are broken into by these same scum.

SOUTH ROBERTSON, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — An investigation is under way in South Robertson after a man was found shot in a driveway late Sunday night.

Authorities say the man was found near the 1700 block of Preuss Road just before midnight. He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where he died.

I saw a crumpled body wrapped in a white sheet next to a black BMW. Blood leaked through the sheet.

I heard the man was from Beverly Hills. No idea yet why he chose this location to kill himself.

I arrived at the scene at 2:05 p.m.

R. posts to FB: “I remember not so long ago a police car chase ended not far from that corner, and the driver being chased shot themselves in their car.”

The news media usually do not cover suicides to avoid encouraging them (unless the suicides are by public figures). Thus I have not been able to find out anything further on this story. And I don’t expect any MSM coverage.

Crime Alert

Posted by on Jan 27, 2009 in Crime |

A Pico-Robertson shul emails its list: One of the most common crimes in the neighborhood surrounding us is burglary or theft from motor vehicles (BTFV). This crime takes place over 100 times a month on average in West LA alone. Car windows can quickly and relatively quietly be smashed and property removed in a few short moments. Car alarms generally prove ineffective against this smash-and-grab type of crime and in addition to the stolen property you will also have the hassle and expense of replacing your car window.
BTFV, however, happens to be one of the most preventable crimes. A prospective thief will usually only target a vehicle they suspect or know has valuable property inside. When you park your car remove cell phones, cameras, laptops, wallets, purses, mp3 players, GPS devices, and other valuables. Do not leave gift-wrapped packages or large sealed boxes or bags on the seats. Lock all valuables in your trunk or preferably take them with you. If the items must remain in the car, at a minimum keep them out of sight. At night, it is best to park in well-lit areas with lots of people around or in your home garage.
Let your friends and neighbors know when a BTFV crime has occurred in your area. Often a thief will target one area repeatedly over the course of a few days. Keeping people informed will allow them to take extra precautions to prevent becoming the next victim.
Contact the LAPD to report any suspicious activity, especially people looking into cars. You can contact the LAPD West Los Angeles Division at 310-444-0701 to report a crime or suspicious activity.

No More Shootings In Pico-Robertson

Posted by on Jun 19, 2008 in Crime |

In late March, we had a few shootings in our neighborhood.

None that I know of since then.

Pico-Robertson is a great place to live, but it is situated next to some bad people and places to our south who sometimes come our way and wreak havoc.

I have friends who’ve been mugged, some at the point of a gun (including Rabbi Elazar Muskin of Young Israel of Century City).

The Los Angeles Times reports April 3, 2008:

They had hoped to reclaim their neighborhood from violence. Scores of marchers walked through a section of the South Robertson area of Los Angeles with banners calling for an end to gangs and guns and urging other locals to join the fight against crime.

But just days later, residents of the Westside community have been shaken by fresh bloodshed in two separate shootings that left a 37-year-old resident dead and a transient wounded.

On Wednesday, Los Angeles police officials said they had no evidence of a link between Sunday’s march and the shootings, and downplayed fears of violence in the area.

But organizers of the event expressed concern that the shootings were related to the rally and complained that the area had been plagued by gang-related crime.

They said residents of the La Cienega Heights neighborhood, where the march took place, reported gang members taking posters left over from the event and scrawling anti-police messages on them. Then they shouted anti-police slogans to mock the earlier marchers.

They were harassing the neighborhood,” said Baila Romm, a member of the local community police advisory board that helped organize the rally and who lives nearby. “People are frightened because people are getting shot and killed. But [residents] don’t want us out of there. They want our support.”

Romm said the march was part of an attempt to revive a neighborhood watch group in La Cienega Heights, which is near the 10 Freeway between La Cienega and Robertson boulevards.

About 70 marchers and police officers attended the event, stopping on street corners to call for residents to join them. About 30 residents signed up to become members of the neighborhood watch, but others kept their distance, Romm said.

Some people were afraid to come out,” she said. “The truth is, if you’re watching, they can’t commit crimes… . If the neighborhood is intimidated and shuts themselves in, they can continue doing it.”

But a day after the march, a transient known to frequent the La Cienega Heights area was shot several times. On Tuesday evening, Rene Wilfredo Cortez’s body was discovered in a narrow pathway leading to the backyard of a home in the 1900 block of South Garth Avenue.
