The Week That Was At YICC

Posted by on May 19, 2009 in yicc |

From YICC.com:

This past weekend at YICC is already being referred to as one of the year’s highlights by those who had the privilege of being in attendance. Our guest on Shabbat was Rabbi Marc Penner, the Rabbi of Young Israel of Holliswood Queens, and director of professional education and advisement at the Center for the Jewish Future of Yeshiva University. Rabbi Penner gave a powerfully moving drasha Shabbat morning on the importance of true kindness. Rabbi Penner’s stimulating afternoon shiur entitled, “Gedolim: wanted dead… or alive?” left the entire crowd buzzing. Rabbi Penner discussed with great passion the threats of misusing our great rabbis and the importance of relating to them, and God, correctly.
Sunday Morning Rabbi Penner returned to kickoff a most fascinating Yom Iyun entitled, “Leading the Jewish Future.” Rabbi Penner discussed the challenges facing contemporary Jewish leaders, some of his ideas for producing male and female Jewish leaders, and the innovative improvements being made in Yeshiva University’s rabbinical school’s professional development program. We then heard a fascinating, and entertaining, presentation by Dr. Bruce Powell, the head of school at the New Community Jewish High School. Dr. Powell explained how to raise our children to become future Jewish leaders. This was followed by a wonderful panel discussion titled, “Charting the Jewish Future” in which we were treated to a very wide variety of speakers and issues. Rosalie Zalis, Senior Vice President of Pacific Capitol Group, passionately explained the importance of making sure that Jewish Education is the highest priority of the community. David Suissa, of the Jewish Journal and Ads4Israel.com then made a powerful presentation on the importance of curiosity, both for Jews who are “connected” and those who are not, to search for meaning and excitement in the vast smorgasbord of Jewish life. Tzivia Schwartz-Getzug, the executive director of Jewish World Watch then gave us an intense and unforgettable first hand account of the horrors of contemporary genocide, and explained the importance of the Jewish community playing a leading role in fighting such evils around the world. Seth Berkowitz, our Shul’s President and Vice President of Edmunds.com concluded the morning with a brilliant discussion of specific Jewish values that can lead the way to a positive Jewish future, despite the grim realities facing much of our contemporary world and community.
The entire morning’s program will be available on our website, yicc.org under the “Torah on the Web” link by the end of the week, along with many of our other fascinating lectures and programs.

Rabbi Yosef Kanefsky (Bnai David) and Rabbi Elazar Muskin (YICC) love each other and their shuls do a lot of things together.

Modern Orthodox Rabbis In Los Angeles Seek To Certify Business Ethics

Posted by on Feb 24, 2009 in Abuse, Agriprocessors, beth jacob, Bnai David, Ethics, modern orthodox, Orthodox Union, yicc |

My first thoughts when I heard about this plan.

I hope the execution of this plan is more effective than some of the spelling in this new letter: “PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL INFORMATION SHARED WITH THE PEULAT SACHIROR ANY OF ITS REPRSENTATIVES WILL BE HELD IN THE STRCTEST OF CONFIDENCE. THE CERTIFRICATION AGREEMENT WILL RFLECT THIS IN WRITING.”

Here’s the letter going out to Jewish business owners in Pico-Robertson in particular and then to the wider city:

Dear Business Owner:

We are writing to invite to join us in an inspiring new project that we have undertaken for the benefit of our community.

As you know, Judaism has a rich tradition and volumes of treatises on business ethics, particularly in the area of ethical labor standards and practices. In an effort to raise awareness of this area of Jewish law and ethics, we have recently formed an organization that will offer local establishments the opportunity to promote and publicize their compliance with labor standards and practices. We are calling this organization Peulat Sachir: The Ethical Labor Initiative .

Peulat Sachir is offering – at no charge – a Covenant Document, to be signed by you and a representative of Peulat Sachir that will hang in your window and will favorably promote your business as being in compliance with proper labor practices. In addition, all “covenanted” businesses, restaurants and markets will be publicized free of charge in the printed bulletins of Beth Jacob Cong., Bnai David – Judea Cong., Kehillat Yavneh, and Young Israel of Century City, who will also take your participation into favorable account whenever choosing vendors for synagogue events. On the enclosed page you will find all of the details as to how you can qualify for the Covenant Document. Peulat Sachir’s ultimate goals are to elevate the level of communal awareness concerning the importance of labor law, and to raise the standards of labor law compliance throughout the Jewish community, focusing initially on the Pico Blvd. strip. We are hoping that you will be excited about being among the pioneers who will work with us to launch this groundbreaking project.

The areas that Peulat Sachir will certify are:

1.

1. Minimum Wage – The current minimum wage for employees in the state of California is $8 an hour.

1.

2. Overtime – Non-exempt employees must be compensated at one-and-a-half times their regular rate of pay for any hours worked over 8 in one day or 40 in one week. Non-exempt employees must be compensated at double their regular rate of pay for any hours worked over 12 in one day.

1.

3. Meal and Rest Breaks – Employers must provide a 30-minute off-duty lunch break on or before the fifth hour of each employee’s shift. A second 30-minute off-duty meal period must be provided on before the tenth hour of each employee’s shift. In addition, employers must provide a paid 10-minute rest break for every four hours worked by an employee.

1.

4. Workers’ Compensation Insurance – Employers must carry appropriate workers’ compensation insurance.

1.

5. Leave Policies – Employers with over 50 employees must give employees who have been with the company for over one year required leaves for caring for a newborn child, caring for a seriously ill family member or for recuperating from a serious health condition in accordance with the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and California Family Rights Act. FMLA also requires that the employee return at a level of pay equal to what he/she was making before taking leave.

1.

6. Discrimination/Harassment Policies: Employers must have policies to discourage and deal with illegal discrimination (e.g., based on age, sex, gender, race, etc.) and harassment. Employers must make employees aware of a mechanism within the company to complain about discrimination and harassment.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL INFORMATION SHARED WITH THE PEULAT SACHIROR ANY OF ITS REPRSENTATIVES WILL BE HELD IN THE STRCTEST OF CONFIDENCE. THE CERTIFRICATION AGREEMENT WILL RFLECT THIS IN WRITING.

Businesses interested in receiving a Peulat Sachir Covenant Document should contact Peulat Sachirat info@peulatsachir.com about applying. (A member of the Peulat Sachir board may also follow up on this letter with a phone call, inviting your participation.)

We would like to emphasize that Peulat Sachir’s goal is not to hurt businesses which may be in non-compliance with federal or state labor laws, but to encourage the patronage of those with proper labor practices. We hope that by increasing awareness of these issues within our community, we and the rest of the world will be able to look at our local businesses as examples of how to treat employees fairly and legally.

Sincerely,

# of lay leaders from among the group

[Rabbi Yosef Kanefsky

Rabbi Daniel Korobkin

Rabbi Elazar Muskin

Rabbi Steven Weil]

HERE’S THE COVENANT:

Our patrons are entitled to know that the employees working in the establishments they patronize are being treated fairly and in accordance with halacha.

Therefore, {Name of business}, represented by the undersigned, hereby affirms that it is in compliance with all local, state, and federal laws enacted to ensure that we treat our employees appropriately, as is consistent with our spiritual commitments toward them.

*

Provision of Meal and Rest Periods

These seminars will be conducted by the volunteers of Peulat Sachir, our partners in this community covenant, or by other qualified advisors.

This covenant is subject to renewal on an annual basis and may be revoked at any time by Peulat Sachir, in its sole discretion. We further hereby agree to welcome the volunteers of Peulat Sachir to inspect a random sampling of our relevant business records on a semi-annual basis, and to interview our employees to confirm our compliance herewith.

Israel Needs Our Help

Posted by on Jan 8, 2009 in yicc |

Rabbi Elazar Muskin emails his members:

I just received a call from Dovid Cohen of Jerusalem who runs the Israel Chessed Fund that we constantly support throughout the year. Dovid, together with a lifetime friend, runs one of the most amazing Tzedakah funds in the world. Every penny that they receive is distributed to the needy (every case they support is checked and verified for authenticity). There is no administrative over head at all. Dovid and his friend volunteer their time to runnning this fund. They literally distribute millions of dollars a year and they are trusted by rabbis throughout the world (Rabbi Berle Wein personally endorses their work).

Dovid informed me that due to the battle in Gaza large numbers of people have moved from southern Israel to Jerusalem for refuge. These families are in desperate need of financial help.

With God’s help I will be traveling to Israel on Tuesday January 13th and I will be seeing Dovid during my trip. If you are interested in participating in this important act of Tzedakah please send in checks ASAP to the Shul office written to YICC G’Mach and earmarked for “Israel Chessed Fund.” I hope to present Dovid with a sizeable check to help in this time of crisis.

May all of our Tefilot be answered and may Israel be victorious against its enemies.

Thank you,
Elazar Muskin

Jason Weiner Is Officially The New Assistant Rabbi At YICC

Posted by on Aug 22, 2008 in yicc |

He was the rabbinic intern for about a year.

From canonist.com July 2006: “It’s all-YCT, all-the-time here at Canonist this week. Anyway, for as much as the delay in certification by the RCA might be setting the yeshiva back, it scored a pretty major coup recently when recent graduate R’ Jason Weiner was hired as a rabbinic intern by the Young Israel of Century City. The rabbi there, Elazar Muskin, is an RCA heavyweight.”

From yicc.org:

Although Rabbi Weiner was born in New York, he grew up in Southern California. After high school he attended Hebrew University of Jerusalem and California State University, Monterey Bay, where he received his B.A. in 2000. While at CSUMB he founded and led a Jewish Student Union and also became the director of Camp Gan Israel of Chabad of South Bay.

After graduating college, Rabbi Weiner returned to New York for six years where he received his rabbinical training. He attended Yeshiva Ohr Sameach in Monsey for two years, followed by Yeshivat Chovevei Torah for four years. During his time at YCT he served as a rabbinic intern at Congregation Ahavas Achim in Highland Park, New Jersey, and the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale. Rabbi Weiner earned his Rabbinic Ordination from Yeshivat Chovevei Torah in 2006 as well as an additional Ordination from Rav Zalman Nechemia Goldberg in Jerusalem. Rabbi Weiner also earned a Masters degree in Jewish History from the Bernard Revel Graduate School at Yeshiva University in 2006.

Rabbi Weiner has published articles in the Journal of Halacha and Contemporary Society, Milin Havivin, Jewish Life: Traditional Living in Los Angeles, as well as the West Coast OU?s weekly Parsha Insights.

Rabbi Weiner’s wife Lauren is from Los Angeles and is a fantastic mother to their children, Kayla Rachel and Yaacov Melech.

‘The Conversion Crisis’

Posted by on Jun 28, 2008 in yicc |

That was the topic of this afternoon lecture at YICC by Professor Daniel Sperber from Bar Ilan.

He said the Modern Orthodox had to take back political power in Israel from the chareidim.

Good luck.

The rigorists win out in Judaism. The Chareidim study more Torah, perform more mitzvot, sacrifice more for their religion, and are better organized and more dedicated than the Modern Orthodox.
